Geraldton

Our 4 days in Geraldton were most enjoyable and relaxing.   On Wednesday, 28/5 we arrived at the Information Centre for some up to date brochures, and were told of a guided tour of the HMAS Sydney Memorial that was starting in 5 mins.    Rather than risk finding a car park at the site we did a very quick walk up the hill and only missed the beginning of the talk.

Thursday morning, sunshine at last!    We drove north via a couple of the local beaches, then to Coronation Beach which is a cheap camp area with very basic facilities.    There were only 2 large vans there, with sites mostly intended for tents and camper trailers.   We continued on a short distance to the turnoff to the Chapman River valley – took the dirt road to Nabawa for our lunch stop, then the bitumen back through Nanson.    It was beautiful farming country, with the flat topped mesas surrounding.

We went back to Geraldton harbour and foreshore for a walk, and late coffee and scones at the Dome café.    This is a café chain not seen in Qld, and their prime position right on the waterfront was inviting.    The view was much better than the food and drink.   There were up to 7 ships waiting outside the harbour to come in for loading with wheat and minerals.

Clear skies and no wind on Friday morning was all that was required for Brian to venture into the Indian Ocean on his wave ski.     There were other board riders in as well – his theory, there is safety in numbers.
